The Play Makers

Our theatre is our world. Our playground. Our life. Our theatre is Back to Back.

We are window watchers and professional liars. We are the first page of children’s diaries.

We are unpredictable.

Mark Deans loves to kiss ladies. Romany loves nightmares where you know you are dreaming. Sarah wonders if anyone knows what’s going on. Brian loves a good opportunity. Scott loves digital television and gadgets. Simon thinks people should pay for their mistakes.   We are good friends. Well, we are close.

We think we might be the imaginings of a sleeping giant.

We want power. Therefore, we are dangerous.

We want a TAKE CHARGE attitude.

Our theatre creates worlds, and then tears them down.

Our theatre is like a cup of coffee: you can slip it slowly or drink it all at once and burn your tongue.

We want to make theatre new to you.

Now, when the world is dark, we need to erase the shadows eroding the sun.

About Back to Back Theatre

Back to Back Theatre creates new forms of contemporary theatre imagined from the minds and experiences of a unique ensemble of actors with a disability, giving voice to the social and political issues that speak to all people.

Based in the regional centre of Geelong, the company is one of Australia’s most globally recognised and respected contemporary theatre companies.

Back to Back seeks to make a body of work that exists in repertoire across time. The company thus tours extensively locally, nationally and internationally.

Since 1999, under the Artistic Directorship of Bruce Gladwin, the company has nurtured a unique artistic voice with an emphasis on the ensemble’s own commentaries on broad social and cultural dialogue. Created through a process of research, improvisation and scripting, new work is realised via collaboration between the ensemble, Artistic Director and guest artists.

In addition to its professional practice, Back to Back collaborates intensively with communities around the world.
